Former Addams Family star Christina Ricci said it’s fun to see Jenna Ortega’s success as the title character in Netflix’s Wednesday.

Ricci, of course, played Wednesday in the movie version of The Addams Family in 1991 and reprised the role in the 1993 sequel Addams Family Values. These days, the prolific actor is starring in the hit series Yellowjackets and has just released her personal passion project, Christina Ricci’s Cat Full of Spiders Tarot Deck and Guidebook.

Ricci also starred as the dorm mother of Ortega’s Wednesday in Season 1 of the blockbuster Netflix series, which gave her the opportunity to formally pass the torch of the character—even though she never felt the role was hers to begin with.

“I’ve never viewed Wednesday as my character or she was a part,” Ricci told me in a recent phone conversation about her tarot deck and guidebook. “I played and I loved that character. And yes, I talk about that character probably once a week ever since I played her because people are so obsessed with the character itself, but I’ve never viewed it as something that is mine.”

The Addams Family, of course, is based on cartoonist Charles Addams’ creation that first appeared in The New Yorker magazine in 1938, per the Tee & Charles Addams Foundation.

Before Christina Ricci and Jenna Ortega’s turns as Wednesday, Lisa Loring made the live-action version of the character famous when she starred in the The Addams Family series ABC-TV from 1964-66.

Ricci said she was flattered to be asked to play Marilyn Thornhill in Wednesday and was thrilled to see Ortega bring her own spin to the character. As a bonus, Wednesday reunited Ricci with director Tim Burton, whom she previously worked with in the filmmaker’s 1999 horror hit Sleepy Hollow opposite Johnny Depp.

“I love getting to see Jenna do it as a fan and as someone who loves the Wednesday character it’s fun to see another Wednesday—but I never felt any personal ownership over that character,” Ricci said. “There have been other actresses who have played that character in the past, and I just feel it’s really fun to be associated with all of this and to be in that world—and it was such a joy to work with Tim again.”

Ricci’s Cat Full of Spiders Tarot Deck and Guidebook—which was released Tuesday—is available in bookstores and online.

Christina Ricci is the darkly delightful pop culture gift that keeps on giving.

From her breakout role as the ultimate goth girl, Wednesday Addams, in The Addams Family, where her deadpan humor and eccentric charm made her a household name, to her haunting portrayal of the mystical Katrina Van Tassel in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, the 44-year-old actress has cemented herself as an irreplaceable icon of our generation.

“That’s very kind of you. I don’t feel like a pioneer… certainly,” Ricci tells PEOPLE when asked what it feels like to be a spooky legend and pioneer in this type of movie genre.

“I was lucky as a young person at that time [with] where our culture was to play really interesting roles, interesting young girls and then interesting women.”

For many of us, the Yellowjackets star became a fixture of our childhoods, shaping how we saw the world of the macabre with a mix of dark humor and heartwarming magic.

Who can forget Casper? Ricci’s portrayal of Kat Harvey had us all believing in ghosts and the possibility of befriending our own. From flying under the stars of Friendship, Maine, to her and (human) Casper’s unforgettable slow dance (I’m not crying, you are), it’s no wonder the 1995 supernatural comedy is a timeless classic for many.

“I just feel like I kind of lucked out,” Ricci continues. “I wasn’t really capable of playing the other type of woman that was available or other type of little girl that they were writing for. So I just feel like I was lucky that there were opportunities and parts and roles.”

Ricci made the idea of the supernatural seem approachable, relatable and endearing, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

The actress recently reunited with her Addams Family costars at L.A. Comic Con, sharing memories alongside Anjelica Huston and Christopher Llloyd, among others.

She’s also leaning into her spooky season persona by releasing a new tarot deck, Cat Full of Spiders, available for purchase now.

No one embodies the dark feminine mystical archetype quite like Christina Ricci. She is a legend in the goth community due to her roles in The Addams Family, Sleepy Hollow, Lizzie Borden Took an Axe, The Gathering, Monstrous, and many many more. And so, it probably comes as no surprise that she is the perfect author to capture the mystery of Tarot.

Her new Cat Full of Spiders Tarot Deck and Guidebook (Insight Editions) is a beautifully crafted collectors’ item for all who love the actress and are interested in divination. With illustrations by by Felipe Flores, the book offers a transporting journey, interweaving the story of a complex fantasy world filled with witches, warlocks, magic spells, and danger, derived from the diverse characters she has embodied over her impressive career. The images, which feature Ricci, are based on aspects of the actress’s own personality. On the “star” card you see Ricci looking like her glamorous character Zelda Fitzgerald, on the “cups” card she looks like a version of Alice in Wonderland, and on the “knight of cups” card she looks like her character Wednesday Addams. Yet all the different versions of Christina blend together, showing the light and the dark, the fierce and the meek.

I spoke with Ricci while she was filming the highly anticipated third season of Yellowjackets for Showtime. She explained how she discovered tarot at the age of 14 on the set of the film Now and Then. “In one scene, my character and her friends went to see a psychic for a tarot reading,” she explains in the guidebook accompanying the deck. She tells me how she was immediately drawn to the cards and the questions derived from each reading. Each card can have many different meanings dependent upon your own unique personality. The questions derived are ones of self-reflection and how we view our own fate.

The unusual and very visual name for the deck came from a phrase Ricci would deploy when she was younger. “I never really knew what the phrase meant except that when I would act crazy or feel anxious, I would say it was the spiders going nuts inside of me,” she explains. “Years later, I realized it was a metaphor. In a way everybody is a cat full of spiders. Along the way, the spiders represent all of the experiences you have, the trauma, the happy moments, all the things that shape you and influence your future,” she tells me.

At different times in her life, she has returned to the tarot as a means of self-reflection and guidance. She felt the time was right to come out with this deck because, “It ticked all the boxes for the kind of things I want to put out there as an artist that focuses on the idea of identity, the individual, and that each person is so interesting, valuable and worthwhile, beyond what you see on the surface” she states. “All the characters that were created for the deck have backgrounds; they all have stories, and worlds they live in,” says Ricci.

“Tarot shows us that the manic in life lies within us,” Ricci says. “It brings into focus how our specific personality and our subconscious creates our fate. Tarot is a great tool for introspection and self-knowledge and this deck is about celebrating the self.”

However, this is no ordinary tarot deck. “We never intended for it to be more than a tarot deck, but now that it’s so rich, and there is so much to it, it could be an amazing jumping off point,” she explains. “Even as one of the creators of the project, I feel very intrigued by many of their stories and I want to know more.” What exactly that looks like, she couldn’t say, but I see a screenplay in the future that delves deeper into this beautiful world she built.

Christina Ricci’s new creative endeavor Cat Full of Spiders Tarot Deck and Guidebook is coming out Tuesday in the early part of the spooky season, but the acclaimed Wednesday and Yellowjackets star said there’s a big misconception about what tarot cards and readings are about.

Yes, tarot card readings can indeed be the driving force of movies like the summer horror hit Tarot, and some people may want to associate them with the same sort of scary preconceptions that accompany Ouija boards. In truth, however, Ricci said there’s really nothing to fear when using a tarot deck.

“I don’t really believe in anything mystical—I think all of the magic that we need in the world takes place right in our brain,” Ricci told me during a recent phone conversation. “So what I love about tarot is it’s basically a tool to use everything you consciously know about yourself, everything your subconscious knows and everything you’ve collected in your personal journey up until this moment.

“Those are the things that are used when you have a tarot reading,” Ricci added. “You pose a question and then cards are drawn and basically based on whatever theme or idea is brought up by the card; then you then come to a conclusion or get an idea based on your own mind, your own experience, your own identity and your own subconscious.”

Basically, Ricci said, tarot card decks are basically “a tool of self-reflection to predict your future.”

“We can all sort of vaguely predict our futures or solution to something based on our knowledge of ourselves and the choices we will always make for the habits that we have,” Ricci explained. “So, I love it because of that, because it really sort of harnesses your self-awareness and self-consciousness to put you more in control of your life to give you more information about yourself.

Available online and in stores, the Cat Full of Spiders Tarot Deck and Guidebook was created by Christina Ricci with tarot expert Minerva Siegel and the cards feature the artwork of illustrator Felipe Flores.

Released by Insight Editions, Cat Full of Spiders Tarot Deck and Guidebook comes in deluxe packaging that includes a 78-card tarot deck and a 128-page guidebook featuring a foreword by Ricci. The guidebook—which comes complete with card meanings and instructions—was designed to aid tarot practitioners of all skill levels.

Cat Full of Spiders Tarot Deck and Guidebook is a personal project for Ricci for many reasons, including the fact that her husband, Mark Hampton, is the creative director of the project.

“The original idea was my husband’s, to create something that was really personal and came from me that conveyed a lot of messages about how I feel about the world and how I feel about magic and life,” Ricci recalled. “We wanted to do that while combining really beautiful artistry and storytelling, and we thought a tarot deck was the best way to do it. We also really loved tarot and wanted to add to the beautiful decks that are out there.”

Ricci’s acting career, of course, kicked off long before her most recent shows Yellowjackets and Wednesday. Ricci’s film career kicked off in 1990 in Mermaids opposite Cher and Winona Ryder.

Since then she’s appeared in such notable features as The Addams Family and its sequel Addams Family Values, Casper, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Sleepy Hollow, Monster and The Matrix Resurrections.

Yet for Ricci’s vast body of work—she’s amassed more than 90 screen credits since 1990— the idea for Cat Full of Spiders Tarot Deck and Guidebook was solely inspired by who Ricci is as a person and isn’t tied to any of her films or television shows.

“It’s inspired by the life that I’ve led as a creative person and as an artist,” Ricci explained. “I lived my life at certain times as different characters since I create stories and create whole worlds for myself in my work, but this is really about me as an individual, not me as an actress.”

“If you see something [in the images on the tarot cards that] looks like it might be a character I’ve played, well, it’s probably because that’s what I look like with dark curls,” Ricci said. “So, the two things are so intermixed because I’ve lived my whole life [acting]. I do understand the misconception there, but that is one of the reasons that I wanted to do this is because I am more than my work. So, my work is something that has definitely been a good part of my life and comes from my brain.”

For readers wondering where Ricci came up with the title of the tarot deck and guidebook, Ricci offered an explanation of where it originated.

“Cat Full of Spiders is a name that I came up with basically metaphorical, the spiders being all of the experiences and traumas or moments that a person or the cat eats in their lives,” Ricci said. “And so, by the end of the journey, the cat or the person is full of the spiders-slash-experienced trauma moments. They’ll never forget the idea that all of that is carried with them.”

The veil between worlds is growing thinner, and once again, Christina Ricci is our guide — this time with the launch of her Cat Full of Spiders tarot deck, seamlessly blending her haunting legacy with the timeless wisdom of the tarot.

From her breakout role as Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family to legendary performances in films like Sleepy Hollow and The Lizzie Borden Chronicles, Ricci, 44, has long been an icon for mystics and lovers of all things macabre.

“I just feel like I kind of lucked out,” Ricci tells PEOPLE exclusively when asked about her experience portraying such unique roles. “I was lucky as a young person at that time [with] where our culture was to play really interesting roles, interesting young girls and then interesting women.”

Be it Kat Harvey’s complicated relationship with a ghost in Casper or her chilling portrayal of a young woman navigating dark secrets in The Gathering, Ricci never ceases to pierce through the screen, captivating audiences worldwide with her eerie aesthetic and supernatural charm.

Launching on Oct. 8, just in time for the spookiest season of the year, Cat Full of Spiders is a “surrealist dive” into Ricci’s “cinematic subconscious,” featuring 78 cards and a specially curated guidebook explaining each tarot card. It also includes fun, simple tarot spreads for beginners who want to experiment with an easy reading.

Although the Yellowjackets’ star first discovered tarot cards on the set of Now and Then — when her character (Roberta) visits a psychic with her friends — her relationship with mysticism goes much deeper.

“My perspective on pretty much all things mystical is that there is real magic in the world. Most of it is sort of grounded and nature-based,” she says. “I think all of the magic that comes from something like tarot has a lot to do with the person asking the questions.”

This is true — if you’re familiar with tarot, you know that the magic lies not just in the cards themselves but in the energy and intention of the person asking the questions. Tarot is equivalent to a mirror, reflecting the seeker’s inner thoughts and essentially guiding them towards clarity.

“Tarot for me feels like an incredible instrument to use your self-knowledge, self-reflection capabilities [and] your intuition,” Ricci says. “You come as yourself with your full journey behind you, all the things you’ve collected in your life emotionally and experientially.”

Metaphorically speaking, this was Ricci’s inspiration behind Cat Full of Spiders: the concept of life’s accumulated experiences — like the cinematic adventures uniquely portrayed in her deck — becoming the “spiders” we carry with us.

“The way you interpret the card in relation to your question has everything to do with who you are and all of your experiences — all the spiders that you’ve swallowed,” she says.

Ricci’s ability to intertwine such creative and profound metaphors with mystical elements showcases not just her creativity but her deep understanding of the human experience.

Cat Full of Spiders is Ricci’s passion project, and just by glimpsing at the brilliant artwork and intricate detail of each card, it’s clear that it comes straight from the heart.

“The minor arcana are all younger versions of me because all of those things have come from my subconscious and have all been expressions of some version of myself,” she continues. “That’s why there are a lot of little nods and references to characters I’ve played.”

With the help of her husband Mark Hampton’s creative direction, California artist Felipe Flores bringing Ricci’s ideas to life and tarot expert Minerva Siegel lending her wisdom, the actress hopes the world can find deeper meaning in their own lives through the ancient practice of tarot.

“This idea also speaks to what I want to do as a humanitarian [which is] pointing out to people that each individual is so much more than what you see in front of them,” Ricci says. “The depths of our minds, our subconscious, are so incredible and so rich, and just the idea that this sort of theme reinforces the importance of the individual over the group.”

The Addams Family star remains true to her Sun sign (Aquarius) in her humanitarianism and collective consciousness.

“I do feel like I’m a good match for an Aquarius,” Ricci says when asked if she resonates with her zodiac sign. “I care a lot about humanity, but more at the level of individuals. I have some passions and themes in my life that have a lot to do with my interest in humanity.”

A highly intellectual Air sign, Aquarius is governed by revolutionary Uranus, the planet of rebellion, individual freedom and unexpected change. Everything from the intriguing roles Ricci has portrayed to her innate connection with the supernatural goes hand-in-hand with Aquarius’ unique essence.

“I don’t really fit into any kind of stereotype and I very much do things my own way, and it totally makes sense to me, [even when] other people think it’s crazy,” she adds.

As Greek philosopher Aristotle so famously said, “There is no great genius without a touch of madness.”
